Thirty miles from pretty much anything sits this oasis in the middle of the Mojave National Preserve. It's the former Union Pacific Kelso depot, constructed in 1924 so its crews could have a home away from home. UP moved out in the mid-1980s; the depot now serves as the Preserve's visitor center.
