Fort Smith Trolley Museum is providing rides to the delegates of the NRHS Fall Conference on restored Fort Smith Light & Traction 224. At the controls is museum president Bradley Martin. This Birney 'safety car' was built in 1919 and ran in Fort Smith until the cessation of streetcar service in 1933. The truck and motors were detached, and the body ended up as a diner. Eventually, the Fort Smith Trolley Museum acquired the body, and mated it to a Birney truck and wheels from elsewhere, beginning its excursion career in late 1990. And still, in 2022, the car is going strong, its time in service to the museum far surpassing its original 14-year tenure on the system for which it was built.
