races west on the River Sub at Reads Landing.
In Milwaukee Road days, this was an important junction, as Milwaukee's Chippewa Valley Line crossed the Mississippi at this site. The spit of land at lower left is the old railroad grade; a pile bridge extended from here to mid-river, where a unique pontoon bridge was located. In April, 1951, unusually heavy ice floes destroyed the pontoon, putting the entire bridge out of service forever. From that point on, traffic to and from the Chippewa Valley moved over Burlington trackage rights from Trevino to Winona.
