In the course of regular operation back in the day, Twin City cars ran on loops; there were no stub-ended lines and no turning facilities, so there was never need to reverse direction. The Excelsior line lacks loop tracks or turning facilities, so the trip to the pier must be accomplished (carefully) in reverse.
