Welded rail prep work: A ballast train, consisting of two locomotives, 35 cars of ballast (several empty by this point) and a caboose are headed southbound toward Butler. A Herzog "cartopper" backhoe sits atop one of the gons.

Three types of material for this summer's project are seen in this photo: piles of aggregate for the crossing were dropped here yesterday; 1/4-mile sticks of welded rail were distributed last week; and concrete grade crossing panels appeared last month.

It is rumored that when this project is complete, the Shoreline will be good for 40 MPH trains.
