Tidewater's Granite Point shoves out of the John Day lock westbound on the Columbia River. The lift at this lock averages 105 feet; the chamber measures 86 feet wide by 675 feet long. The guillotine-style gates on either end weigh 876 tons apiece and are raised and lowered by a series of 32 cables and giant pulleys. Above the dam is Lake Umatilla while the tailwater is Lake Celilo.
